Digital Satellite TV

Find A Satellite Provider

What is Digital Television?  Digital technology allows sound and picture to be converted into a digital format and then broadcast to your television through your satellite system. It has many advantages over the old Analog technology. The same signal can be broadcast with digital using less space and with better clarity. This means that satellite providers can send your television more information with a better signal.

Why the switch to Digital?   There are many reasons to switch to Digital. It allows for more programs to be broadcast over the same channel or it will allow better quality High Definition programs to be broadcast. It also allows interactive video and data which is not possible with Analog. Digital TV is free of snow, shadows and other distortion which plagues Analog. Finally, moving away from Analog will free up some of the airwaves for other uses.

How will the switch affect non satellite users? Eventually all broadcast companies will be broadcasting in Digital. If you have an older analog TV set, you will simply need to buy a converter box to use with your television. This box will convert the signals into something that your TV can read. This will not however allow you to take full advantage of digital technology. You will not get the full benefits of enhanced picture and sound quality.

When will the switch to Digital be complete?  Currently, Analog television is due to be replaced completely by Digital TV at the end of 2006. This deadline could be extended if the use of Digital televisions is not widespread by that date. Certainly by the end of this decade, Analog will be obsolete.
